John Cena didn't compete at this year's WrestleMania (likely due to upcoming filming commitments for DC's Peacemaker), but he did have a great moment in the main event when he took down Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa before The Rock hit him with a Rock Bottom.
We've known for a while that the 16-time world champion's in-ring career is starting to wind down and, during a recent conversation with Pat McAfee, Cena reiterated his intention to retire.
"When I feel I can no longer perform to the capacity of the product, it's time to step away," Cena explained. "That's not tough, the toughest thing is that I love it so much. I put a line in the sand for myself for 50, and I honestly think it's going to be before that. I'll be 47 in a few weeks."
He'd go on to suggest his final run could be in 2025, meaning Cena will likely wrestle his last match at WrestleMania 41.
"It is gonna be time soon for me to go, and I'm embracing that and enjoying that and it allows me to be present," he added. "I can say this with the utmost certainty: I will always, always be part of the WWE family but the time to compete in the WWE has come to a close."
Helping matters is the fact the leader of the Cenation can pass the baton to Cody Rhodes. Sharing his belief that Roman Reigns has earned "GOAT" status, Cena would explain that he believes the same awaits the American Nightmare.
"You know that I wear my values on my sleeve," he started. "Words like 'Never give up,' 'Hustle, loyalty and respect." I always want a fair chance. So in the biggest event of the year, with our most important prize on the line, I am just an advocate for a fair chance. You know I'm a huge fan of Cody Rhodes, but you also know I'm a huge fan of Roman Reigns. I believe Roman Reigns is the greatest of all time."
Adding that Rhodes' story is just getting started following his title win, Cena noted, "I told [Cody] in the ring that night when I got to embrace him, he had the championship in his right hand. I said, 'Do you feel how heavy it is?' He said, 'Yes.' I said, 'It will get heavier every day.' Because that is the burden you bear of trying to craft the path to being the greatest of all time."
