Yesterday, we learned that filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday. It appears their son, Nick, murdered them, and tributes for The Princess Bride helmer and his spouse have since poured in.
President Donald Trump, however, took a slightly different approach. While acknowledging that Reiner's passing was "very sad," he also pointed out that, "He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump." He also insinuated that the director and actor's "Trump Derangement Syndrome" was a contributing factor in his murder.
While those remarks drew widespread criticism from those on the right and left, Trump has since doubled down, saying that Reiner, a vocal critic of the President, was "very bad for our country."
WWE has a relatively close relationship with the Commander-in-Chief, and Triple H and Stephanie McMahon have made several appearances alongside Trump in the Oval Office in recent years. For WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley, Trump's latest comments are the straw that's broken the camel's back...and his relationship with WWE.
"While I have been concerned about WWE‘s close relationship with Donald Trump for several months — especially in light of his administration’s ongoing cruel and inhumane treatment of immigrants (and pretty much anyone who 'looks like an immigrant') — reading the President’s incredibly cruel comments in the wake of Rob Reiner’s death is the final straw for me. I no longer wish to represent a company that coddles a man so seemingly void of compassion as he marches our country towards autocracy."
"Last night, I informed @WWE talent relations that I would not be making any appearances for the company as long as this man remains in office. Additionally, I will not be signing a new Legends deal when my current one expires in June. I love WWE, will always treasure my time with them, and I am deeply appreciative for all the opportunities they afforded me. But, in the words of Popeye the sailor, 'I stands all I can stands, and I can’t stands no more.'"
This comes after Foley took to social media to write, "How any of my @wwe colleagues can stand by, let alone stand next to this man is beyond me."
Despite having a Legends deal with the company, Foley has only appeared sporadically on WWE programming in recent years. He unveiled the 24/7 Championship in 2019 and was attacked by The Fiend later that same year. He also announced the qualifiers for the Iron Survivor Challenge at NXT Deadline in late 2023.
