The news broke on Saturday that WWE had quietly moved Andrade's profile to the Alumni section of its website. We've since heard that he was released by the company, though there have been conflicting reports surrounding what led to that.
Sports Illustrated's Jon Alba is the latest to chime in, confirming that Andrade's dismissal came as a result of a disciplinary issue and was not a mutual decision made by him and the company. According to the report, the former United States Champion "had at least one wellness policy violation during his most recent WWE run."
We don't know whether that was a result of him using a banned/illegal substance or his refusal to be tested. Either way, WWE is said to have suspended him at the time of his violation.
Interestingly, Andrade was reportedly told to leave a SmackDown taping last month and was eventually "escorted out of the building." This was related to the alleged suspension and "affected major creative plans for his tag team with Rey Fenix."
Of note is the fact that, in January 2020, Andrade was suspended for 30 days following his first violation of the Wellness Policy. WWE no longer publicly announces those, and Alba's insights have been backed up by PWInsider.com's Mike Johnson.
They make note of a rumour that Andrade essentially ghosted the company for several weeks after he left the United States and travelled to South America, ignoring attempts to contact him.
The site does, however, dispute claims that part of his issues was that WWE came after he refused to work in AAA. That's described as untrue, because Andrade was never asked to wrestle there and wasn't ever part of creative plans for the newly acquired promotion.
Andrade signed with WWE in 2015 and was pushed as a top star in NXT as Andrade "Cien" Almas. As was so often the case when Vince McMahon was in charge, that didn't translate to the main roster when he started competing on RAW and SmackDown in 2018.
He did hold the United States Championship for a time, but left the company in 2021 and later joined AEW as Andrade El Idolo. His time there wasn't handled particularly well, so his return to WWE at the 2024 Royal Rumble was met with quite a bit of excitement from professional wrestling fans.
Short of this becoming a legal issue, WWE is unlikely to comment on the circumstances surrounding Andrade's release. He's bound to break his silence on what happened eventually, though.
