The Motor City Machine Guns defeated #DIY on last night's episode of WWE SmackDown in a No. 1 contenders' match, earning them a future title opportunity at the WWE Tag Team Championship.
The current tag team champions, The Street Profits, were ringside for the match as Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin defeated Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa to make things come full circle back to their last shot at the titles from the 2025 WWE Royal Rumble event, wherein they nearly had #DIY beaten, but Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford interrupted.
Of course, this all dates back to the original inciting incident of the current chaos the tag team division on SmackDown has been over the past few months, wherein The Street Profits were No. 1 contenders set to face The Motor City Machine Guns, but were attacked backstage by #DIY, who then replaced The Street Profits, turned on their friends MCMG, won the tag team titles, and looped both Pretty Deadly and Los Garza into a side story by having Kit Wilson and Elton Prince lie that they had seen Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo of Legado del Fantasma be the attackers. (What a long road to explain all that, right?!)
Interestingly, WWE did not state when this tag team title match will take place. Given how much of an emphasis was put on several other announcements of WrestleMania 41 matches being set up, the fact that this wasn't mentioned to be for a shot at WrestleMania could mean one of two things: either this is not currently scheduled to be at WrestleMania because it's going to happen on SmackDown that weekend's Friday night instead, or something will happen where the match will change, possibly by adding more teams.
However, to assess the other teams, #DIY did just not only lose the titles to The Street Profits, but lose to The MCMG. That would effectively prove they aren't in contention. Los Garza are more concerned with Rey Fenix now. And then, there's Pretty Deadly, who seemingly started a storyline with Melo Don't Miz by getting into a tiff with them backstage. That could just be a SmackDown feud going forward, with Wilson, Prince, The Miz, and Carmelo Hayes sitting out WrestleMania, too, unfortunately.
Then again, even someone as important as Solo Sikoa could be off the WrestleMania card, so WWE could be putting the entire SmackDown tag team division on the sidelines.
In any fashion, this tag team title match hasn't been announced for next week, meaning keep an eye out for it to go down WrestleMania Weekend in some fashion.
