During Friday night's SmackDown, Royal Rumble winner Charlotte Flair and WWE Women's Champion Tiffany Stratton came face-to-face for a heated exchange moderated by commentator Wade Barrett.
Multiple outlets have since revealed that the two women went off-script and said "very little" of what was in the rundown for them. Flair was clearly thrown off her game by the fans in Chicago mercilessly booing her, and she attempted to bury Tiffy to little success.
Stratton hit back with some scathing words to her WrestleMania opponent, prompting a rattled Flair to start making fun of Tiffany's voice. With that, the champion hit back by comparing The Queen's WrestleMania record with her "0-3" divorce record.
Stratton quickly slid out of the ring after delivering that barb, though Flair responded by claiming Stratton's real-life boyfriend, Ludwig Kaiser, had been sliding into her "DMs" (which he's since dismissed).
This all came after Flair was heavily criticised for seemingly setting out to bury Stratton on the March 21 episode of SmackDown, and many believe this was Stratton's way of responding. Now, we have apparent confirmation.
Talking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com said, "There have been problems between the two for about two weeks. So people knew about it. And, I mean, you can even, you know, one thing about this is it also shows a complete double standard in how people view things."
"Because if this same thing had happened in AEW, while the blame would still probably go on the people in the ring, of course, it would largely go on Tony Khan for, if it was him, for 'You’ve had two weeks to figure this out, to get these people on the same page. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.' And there they went, out there, and they just went off the rails."
"And both of them, did you know what I mean? It was like Charlotte is getting more of the blame, and probably deservedly so, but they both are getting blamed for it," Meltzer added after once again being unable to resist bringing AEW into a conversation about WWE.
Taking the wrestling historian's obsession with defending that company - which, as we write this, is running on fumes - aside, he added that Charlotte was first to deviate from the script. Apparently, Tiffany's response was in "retaliation," though she's said to have rolled out of the ring to avoid it getting worse and as a defence mechanism.
It doesn't sound like the argument continued backstage, and regardless of what happened to lead to this verbal back-and-forth, excitement for their match at WrestleMania has definitely increased.
Of course, this isn't the first time a Charlotte Flair promo has gone off the rails due to The Queen's issues with another WWE Superstar...
