Iyo Sky / Stephanie Vaquer has become the new WWE Women's World Champion, defeating Iyo Sky / Stephanie Vaquer to win the title during WWE Wrestlepalooza at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana on September 20, 2025.
How did this go down tonight, what led to this, and what could be on the horizon? Let's break it all down!
How We Got Here:
Last month (August 11 to be exact), Naomi was set to defend her Women's World Championship on Monday Night Raw against the woman she had previously dethroned via a Money in the Bank cash-in at WWE Evolution, Iyo Sky. However, the match didn't take place. The following week, Naomi announced that she was vacating the championship, revealing that she is pregnant.
WWE spent the next few weeks stalling for time before eventually announcing that the new champion would be decided here at Wrestlepalooza with Sky getting her title rematch by proxy of facing Stephanie Vaquer, who had won a battle royal at WWE Evolution to earn a title shot for WWE Clash in Paris, which she did not receive due to the sudden nature of Naomi relinquishing the title.
Why WWE didn't just go with Sky vs. Vaquer at Clash in Paris is unknown, but could very well just come down to milking an extra month out of nothing and stretching this out to the big ESPN debut to guarantee a title would change hands. After all, they swapped in Nikki Bella vs. Becky Lynch for the Women's Intercontinental Championship in Paris, so the fans still got a women's title match with two big names.
Nevertheless, Sky vs Vaquer at this event is what went down to crown the new champion, and both were game challengers, kicking out of each other's signature maneuvers and refusing to be taken out.
Of course, no match can remain an even contest forever. While an SVB wasn't able to put away Sky, Vaquer managed to score the victory by dodging one of The Genius of the Sky's trademark moonsaults, following it up with a Spiral Tap for the pinfall.
Personal Reactions & What Happens Next?:
Vaquer has quickly risen the ranks in World Wrestling Entertainment, but rightfully so. She came into the company with quite a bit of buzz and immediately lived up to the hype. Since her debut in NXT, she's consistently performed amazing matches, keeps improving on her English skills to enhance her promos, and just exudes star power aura.
While Sky is no slouch and could have easily been justified as holding this title once again, she already has a storyline with Rhea Ripley and The Kabuki Warriors. Vaquer holding the title instead will prevent her from having nothing to do and it will freshen up the title scene a bit, as she's yet to have matches with a good portion of the Raw roster (unlike Sky).
Good for Vaquer! She deserves it. Hopefully, she'll be champion for quite a long time and will have many great feuds and matches into 2026. Despite all her success so far, this could very easily be just the start of something even bigger for her.
