Last month, WWE announced that John Cena's final match will "headline" Saturday Night's Main Event on Saturday, December 13, at Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
The Leader of the Cenation will take on AJ Styles at this weekend's Crown Jewel PLE, but there's been no word on who his final opponent is.
Some have speculated that it could be a rematch with Brock Lesnar, while names such as Kevin Owens, The Miz, and Edge are constantly thrown out there by fans, no matter how unlikely some of them may be.
Well, the mystery may have finally been solved. According to Dave Meltzer, former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Gunther is going to be Cena's final WWE opponent.
Multiple sources are said to have confirmed plans for the Austrian to battle Cena, and it appears we're getting a tournament beforehand to decide who will get the honour of facing the 17-time WWE Champion in his final bout. Ultimately, it's going to be Gunther who emerges from that with the right to battle Cena.
Gunther retired WWE Hall of Famer, Goldberg, earlier this year, so it seems safe to assume that he'll similarly defeat Cena on his way out of WWE. Either that, or the Leader of the Cenation will manage to beat the Der Ringgeneral to end his career with one last win. That arguably wouldn't do Gunther many favours, though.
Earlier this year, Cena said this about his decision to wrap up his in-ring career:
"What I was trying to do is state facts and me being honest with my record basically led me to be like ‘I got to retire.’ The reason I hadn’t had a lot of success in the WWE is because I’m a part-time participant. This needs to consume your life to be great."
"Not only consume your life but like you really have to be curious, passionate, open, humble. Man, I can only imagine that if you are not fully focused, coachable, and 100% involved in fight training. So in me trying to split time and thinking that I can do both. I just did this a lot less and less and was used accordingly."
"As you are ushered on the way out, you’re supposed to build all this energy and then give it away. That’s the cycle of life in sports entertainment. If you leave with the energy, you have robbed the business. So me saying this over and over again, I was like, ‘Man, I haven’t won a match since this. I’m going to be 48 next week.’ So I was like, ‘Oh man, it’s time to retire.’ That’s when I was like, ‘I’d like to do this farewell tour.'"
