Ten Matches Where WWE Wrestlers Had Zero Chemistry

Ten Matches Where WWE Wrestlers Had Zero Chemistry

This list will count down the ten matches where the lack of chemistry between wrestlers resulted in some of the worst matches of their respective careers.

There are millions of matches locked in the WWE vault, so there's no shortage of good or bad matches. However, these bouts just didn't click because the opponents didn't have the chemsitry neccessary to do so. All of these wrestlers have had good matches in the past, but for some reason, they weren't good here. Let's get started with the matches that have the least amount of chemistry.

WWE Championship match: King Mabel vs. Diesel

Deemed the worst Summerslam main event of all time, there’s no question that this stinker has earned that reputation. The problem is that Diesel and King Mabel aren’t good workers. Diesel is a solid hand who can be carried to a good match with the right worker. But the former WWE Champion has a basic move set for your stereotypical powerhouse.

What happens when you eliminate the power moves from Diesel? You take away his special attribute that makes him exciting. It also didn’t help that Mabel broke Diesel’s back during the final sequence, so the WWE Hall of Famer had trouble moving throughout the remainder of the match.

The spot where King Mabel tackled the referee out of the ring was awkward, and so was Lex Luger’s interference. It was head-scratching to see Diesel take out Luger when it was obvious that he was down there to help him fight off Sir Mo and King Mabel. We can give some leeway to the anticlimactic finish since Diesel was wrestling through an injury, though it certainly didn’t leave Summerslam off on a good note.

The Great Khali vs. Kane

Look, it’s a Great Khali match, so fans go in expecting a terrible match. This entire list could be The Great Khali vs. wrestler X, Y, and Z; however, what makes his feud with Kane stand out is that the chemistry just wasn’t there. It was a lumbering big man vs. bigger man match that lacked any sizzle.

But the more matches these two had, the worse they got. Kane was no spring chicken himself, but if you put him in the ring with a good worker then you can get something great out of him. The Great Khali was not the right opponent. At the very least, Triple H and John Cena got the best out of Khali, but this lifeless feud tried to put the heat back onto a character that fans just weren’t into.

Shawn Michaels vs. Mr. McMahon

There’s always something special about Vince McMahon’s matches. Pitting the cowardly, but power-hungry boss against one of the top stars usually results in an entertaining match, but that just wasn’t the case here. This was essentially a squash match and to a certain extent, rightfully so.

Vince McMahon isn’t in the same league as Shawn Michaels so The Heartbreak Kid dominating the match didn’t feel out of place. But McMahon always finds a clever way to get the advantage over his opponents. Sadly, his WrestleMania 22 attempt was just a string of lackluster interferences.

The Spirit Squad had no business being a part of this feud. They were a comedy act that felt out of place in an intense feud between Michaels and McMahon. It didn’t do the group any favors when they were squashed by one man, nor did they bring any value into the match. And Vince’s brief period of controlling the bout was very dull and uninspired. Given that this is Shawn Michaels, it’s shocking that this match was so bland, but maybe if he had God by his side then it would’ve been better.

Alexa Bliss vs Nia Jax

The story of Nia Jax and Alexa Bliss going into their WrestleMania 34 match was pretty good. The problem was that the dynamic was completely off. Nia Jax was Goliath and Alexa Bliss was David, yet the layout of their WrestleMania encounter had Bliss take control of a good portion of the match.

It never came across as believable because Nia was built as a monster and the fact that she had to sell for a wrestler the size of Alexa Bliss was pretty laughable. These two could have a good match someday, but the roles needed to be properly set. Jax failed as a babyface because it was hard to buy her as a bullied and sympathetic figure after she grew her name from being a dominant force.

Randy Orton vs. Hulk Hogan

Wasn’t it nice of young Randy Orton to put over that up-and-coming star Hulk Hogan?

Whether you loved or hated Hogan’s match against Shawn Michaels at Summerslam 2005, it’s still talked about to this very day. However, Hogan’s final WWE match has been completely wiped out of everyone’s minds.

It’s a bad match, but not just for the noticeable reasons. It’s well documented how many surgeries the former WWE Champion has had throughout the years so his slow movement in the match was no surprise. The main issue is that this match didn’t do Randy Orton any favors.

This was complete Hogan domination as Orton wasn’t given any chance to shine against the aged veteran. Orton was doing the Legend Killer gimmick and he’s had plenty of gems against names like Mick Foley and The Undertaker. The 26-year-old was finally hitting his stride after WWE fumbled his babyface turn hard.

Having a match against Hulk Hogan made sense, but it was ridiculous that Orton was made to look like a chump in their Summerslam bout. His brief offense was forgettable and it was ludicrous that the WWE Hall of Famer got the easy and clean victory over Orton. The chemistry between these two was non-existent because this match was about making Hulk Hogan look good. Nothing less, nothing more.

Bobby Lashley vs. Sami Zayn

You know the sad thing about Bobby Lashley and Sami Zayn is that they could have a great match. But the problem was that Zayn was seen as a coward in Vince’s eyes, so there’s no way that these two could have an even back-and-forth match.

We can’t forget their dreadful feud in 2018 that killed Lashley as a babyface. But their rematch at the Survivor Series 2020 pay-per-view was no better than their previous encounters. There are times when great workers simply have no chemistry in the ring, but matches like these prove that great workers can be handicapped if the layout of the match doesn’t play to their strengths.

Sean O’Haire vs. Rikishi

WWE tried to pair Sean O’Haire and Roddy Piper together and it turned out to be a total dud. Both men didn’t have chemistry with one another and it showed throughout their brief run in 2003. Their worst outing was at Backlash 2003 where O’Haire fought Rikishi.

The match was filled with several notable miscues such as Rikishi selling the traditional heel manager pulling the leg of the wrestler’s opponent. The problem was that Piper didn’t perform the spot so Rikishi had to stand there and look awkward selling it anyway. It didn’t get any better when Piper came in to distract the referee.

This was a very short match, but it painted the oddball pairing of O’Haire and Piper perfectly; both men are talented, but they just weren’t the right fit for one another.

Elimination Chamber match: Shayna Baszler vs. Asuka vs. Liv Morgan vs. Ruby Riott vs. Sarah Logan vs. Natalya

The idea of this match was sound. Having Shayna Baszler run rampant and tear through every entrant in the Elimination Chamber match was a strong way to put her over. Baszler looked like a star once this match was all said and done, but unfortunately, this squash match left out one thing that is vital for every match: entertainment.

The first few minutes of this match were solid, even though the crowd could care less about Ruby, Natalya, and Sarah; however, the match broke down once Baszler entered.

There were a couple of notable botches including the referee completely missing Asuka’s pin attempt in the final minutes of the match. The repetitive way Baszler won the match certainly didn’t help make this more exciting. But the biggest issue was the layout. These girls were booked to be jobbers. Since Baszler killed Ruby, Sarah, Natayla, and Liv so quickly, we got awkward time-filling moments where Shayna was pacing around waiting for her next victim.

That killed the crowd’s investment in the match and hindered the entertainment aspect. The final confrontation between Asuka and Baszler was fine, but it didn’t get enough time because WWE wasn’t going for a classic match-up between the former NXT Women’s Champions.

As I said before, the value of this match was how strongly Shayna was put over, but this was the main event of the 2020 Elimination Chamber, this should’ve been laid out in a way that eliminated the minutes where Baszler was standing around doing nothing and given Asuka some more near falls before being put away.

But do you know what’s even worse than this? After all of this build-up for Shayna Baszler, WWE drops the ball by having her lose to Becky Lynch the next month, making this match feel worthless in the end.

Charlotte Flair vs. Carmella (Backlash 2018)

The story going into the match was that Carmella was a fluke champion who wasn’t in the same league as Charlotte Flair. So what happens? Carmella dominates 90% of the match with rest holds and plenty of stalling.

She ends up getting a clean win over Flair, negating the story that Carmella wasn’t as good as Charlotte. The match was below average because Carmella just wasn’t a strong worker, and as talented as Charlotte Flair is, she wasn't able to guide this match to a quality level.

Brock Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman

Brock Lesnar and Bruan Strowman should’ve been a clash of the Titans. The “Monster” vs. “The Beast” style matches with destruction, mayhem, and carnage. Sadly, the most memorable spot in any of Lesnar and Strowman’s matches was the shoot punches that Brock Lesnar did on Strowman telling him to calm down. That wasn’t even a singles match between the two!

Their first match at No Mercy in 2017 was, oddly, a wrestling match. This should’ve been a balls-to-the-wall explosive match with finishers and suplexes. Instead, it was a boring and rather forgettable bout, which is a shame as it came off the incredible four-way match involving Lesnar and Strowman at Summerslam.

There’s just no magic between Strowman and Lesnar. Their rematches weren’t any better, and it made Strowman come off worse because everything that made him special seemingly disappeared during his single matches with Lesnar.
