Shane McMahon made his surprise return to WWE during this past April's WrestleMania for what looked set to be an impromptu match with The Miz. However, moments after the bell rang, he crumpled to the floor after performing a leapfrog.
Shane was then pulled out of the ring and The Miz and Snoop Dog were forced to improvise. Later, we learned that he'd torn his quad, a serious injury which has put even full-time pro wrestlers on the shelf for several months.
WWE has largely pretended Shane didn't return in the months since, not mentioning him or showing what happened in video packages recapping the show. Many have wondered whether this might mark the end of his in-ring career, but it sounds like his recovery is going well.
Shane's son, Declan McMahon, recently shared an update and shared new insights into the severity of his father's injury.
"His rehab is going very, very well. He’s gotten back to jogging, squatting, and he’s starting to work out again. It's getting kind of difficult for him to bend side to side. But his rehab is going really, really well," the younger McMahon explains. "He’s making phenomenal progress."
"So the doctor says all the time that he's healing quicker than they thought, and when he tore it, he completely tore his quad tendon. That’s a very long, hard recovery, but he's been crushing rehab. He’s been doing his thing. And he hopefully will get back soon. And obviously, you want to see your dad be able to do what they love. My dad loves wrestling.”
We would like to see Shane wrestle again, even if it is for one final match. Triple H, who now calls the shots creatively, is likely the one who brought him back so the potential is there to give his brother-in-law one final run.
However, could we see Declan in the ring? He pondered that possibility earlier this month. "When you've come up in this business and seen it...I'm never ruling it out," he teased. "I would love to get in the ring, maybe a couple of times. You have to see if the opportunity presents itself. It's all about the story. But, we'll see."
Seeing the father and son together on TV could be a lot of fun, especially now it's clear Vince's time in front of the camera is very much over. Hopefully, we'll have more to share about Shane's status soon, but we wish him a speedy recovery.
