Tonight's edition of WWE NXT was the special Full Sail University NXT Homecoming edition, featuring a return to their old stomping grounds.
This was highlighted with a video package opening the show, showcasing clips from the classic "black and gold" era of NXT, such as Seth Rollins becoming the first champion, old interviews with Finn Balor saying they wanted to make NXT a great era in pro wrestling, and some iconic moments.
After that, the show's intro made use of the old school graphics, along with using the old theme song, "Roar of the Crowd" by CFO$. Of course, replacing talent from the past were members of the current roster like Ethan Page and Blake Monroe.
Interestingly, Joe Hendry was listed on there as well. Nothing has been announced about Hendry signing with WWE and being an official part of the NXT roster, but his inclusion could mean some kind of deal is in place. If not, it would be strange for WWE to advertise a TNA star like that.
Triple H then spoke to the audience, thanking them (as well as the talent and the crew) for the passion that gave NXT that special feeling and allowed them to make magic together. Shawn Michaels came out to talk about how his era of NXT is taking the brand to the next level, leading to some tension between the two.
Teasing a fight, William Regal came out to try to book them against each other in a WarGames match, calling back to his trademark catchphrase.
They were then interrupted by Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair. The tag team champions reminded everyone how the women's division was always a backbone for NXT and will continue to be, naming some of the talent that paved the way like Ember Moon, Carmella, The Four Horsewomen, Asuka, and more.
The women's tag team champions then went on to retain their titles against The Culling.
