Bret Hart has never been shy to speak his mind.
The former WWE Champion has been causing quite the stir as of late. First, it’s been the constant jabs at Hulk Hogan, a man he’s never been friends with. The WWE Hall of Famer has also taken shots at Jake “The Snake” Roberts and Gunther.
During Bret Hart’s latest pot shot, he wasn't hesitant to mention Goldberg, who he notoriously hates because the former WCW star was a big reason that Bret had to retire very early in his career. However, it wasn’t just Goldberg that got caught in the crossfire. Speaking at the Vaughn Comic Con, Hart criticized today’s wrestlers as he feels that they are actors cosplaying as pro wrestlers.
“My personal feeling about professional wrestling today is that the wrestlers today, for the most part, are actors pretending to be wrestlers. Nobody puts a hold on. No one has what we used to call wrestling psychology anymore, where they work on a leg or work on pinning your opponent. There’s no strategy (compared) to what I learned in wrestling, where you tell a story and try to make things as real and believable as you can.
The real art form is to never injure anybody. Two wrestlers go out there, tell their story, and come back. I think it’s still the case today, the first thing they do when they come back to the dressing room is they hug and shake hands, and look at each other and go, ‘I’m okay. Nothing hurt. I didn’t break my neck or anything. You didn’t knock all my teeth out.’ You’re just so happy that you go out and give this performance. The real art is to not hurt anyone. Unfortunately, Bill Goldberg never got that memo,”
There’s certainly a lot of truth in what Bret Hart is saying about today’s wrestling as guys can be quite reckless in the ring. But in terms of guys pretending to be actors, wrestling is a diverse sport (stylistically) and there’s something for everyone in the business. Wrestling has evolved since the 80’s and 90’s, and though there’s plenty of room for old school wrestling, but there’s nothing wrong with the current styles that fans see in different promotions. There are going to be plenty of fans who agree with Hart's statement and that's perfectly fine, but wrestling isn't a one size fits all sport.
