In 2018, The Undertaker and Triple H squared off at Super ShowDown in Australia in what was supposed to be their last match. There was no need to revisit the rivalry after their classic WrestleMania clashes, but Vince McMahon was eager to reignite interest in a product that he'd driven into the ground.
The bout ended with Shawn Michaels helping Triple H defeat the Deadman, leading to the announcement that HBK was coming out of retirement (he'd previously been retired by The Undertaker at the Show of Shows) for a tag team match at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia.
Taker enlisted Kane for a Brothers of Destruction reunion, and what followed was...well, quite possibly one of the worst matches in WWE history.
D-Generation X vs. Brothers of Destruction would have been much better had it taken place several years earlier, but does the Heartbreak Kid have any regrets about unretiring for one night only? Surprisingly, no.
Talking on The Undertaker's podcast, Michaels shared his take on why it was a fitting end for his chaotic career after his fellow WWE Hall of Famer described their clash as a "train wreck."
"It so doesn’t bother me. I don’t care. If that’s going to be the one out of the whatever the 599 that went fantastic. You put one blemish on it and that’s gonna I could care. You couldn’t. No one could badger me enough to make me feel bad about that. I’m sorry. I almost take that as a sense of pride, because...think about the life I’ve lived."
"I don’t like winning my last match. You can’t be the Heartbreak Kid and win your last match. I can’t be a member of DX and not have that last match just be completely freaking bonkers."
"I don’t know. I think I’ll say this. It’s because, through the help of you and countless other guys, I’m so proud of the rest of it. There’s just...there’s not enough. There’s not enough shame in this world to make me feel like...I don’t know."
Despite AJ Styles' repeated attempts to get Michaels to face him in a match, HBK's in-ring career is over. He's since moved into a full-time role backstage in WWE, serving as the Senior Vice President of Talent Development, Creative, and a key figure in NXT.
