Roman Reigns has been Universal Champion for over two years, and since defeating Brock Lesnar at this year's WrestleMania, he's also held the WWE Championship.
While having both belts certainly emphasises the Head of the Table's dominance, it also leaves RAW and SmackDown without a world champion who appears on a regular basis. For better or worse, Reigns is now a part-timer and it feels like the right time to once again split the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship into two titles.
With the plan clearly to keep Reigns undefeated for the foreseeable future (and likely through next year's WrestleMania), that's easier said than done, but it appears to be something WWE is mulling over.
There had been discussions prior to Clash at the Castle about splitting the title so Drew McIntyre could win in his home country. Now, @WrestleVotes is reporting that while the company would like to go into WrestleMania season with two individual champions, they don't want Reigns to lose any matches before then.
As a result, Triple H is said to be "open to all things creatively here."
We'd argue that the best possible route here would be for Reigns to have to defend both titles on the same night, with one of those bouts being a Triple Threat match. One of the other competitors could be pinned, meaning he'd lose that one belt, but without actually being pinned or submitted himself. We'd bet on him keeping the Universal title as he's obviously held it the longest.
