WWE SUMMERSLAM 2018 Reaction: A Surprisingly Damn Good Pay-Per-View

On Sunday night at the Barclays center, WWE held 2018 Summerslam with the likes of Becky Lynch finally turning heel and Roman Reigns winning the big one. Get my reaction on the biggest party of the summer.

Well I’ll be damned, Summerslam was a good show. Maybe great? Admittedly, I was ready for a long, boring 4 hours (I don’t watch the pre-show because, life) with my 24 pack of Corona, but matches kept being good. And booking made sense! To be clear, there wasn’t a match that you’ll remember a year from now. But nothing was bad or insulting. Well, except one thing.

The only thing that really pissed me off was Kevin Owens vs. Braun Strowman. I just don’t get the point in burying Owens. Perhaps I got so angry due to being a big fan of the guy, who’s tremendously talented and should mean so much more. But I can no longer take Owens seriously as a threat.

I feel keeping him off television for the rest of the year is what he needs. Perhaps come back at the Royal Rumble and be the badass he played so well in NXT and ROH. But Let’s be real, that’s never happening.

Nakamura/Hardy, Lesnar/Reigns, and Rousey/Bliss were all fine for the goals they were trying to accomplish. Roman Reigns is the Universal champion. Cool. Fine. Yay! I was genuinely happy when he walked out with the title last night. In fact, Strowman leaving with the title would’ve pissed me off. Why?

Because that means Reigns has to conquer another mountain to being at the top again. Knowing WWE, this would have been dragged out to WrestleMania creating another year of predictability, until finally, the “Big Dog” wins the big one again in the main event of 35.

With Reigns walking into Mania 35 with the title, it at least creates doubt as to whether he’s going to lose; Plus, I just can’t take another story of Reigns conquering Y again at WrestleMania 35.

Rollins/Ziggler, New Day/Bludgeon Brothers, Corbin/Balor, Miz/Bryan were all really good. The Balor surprise was really cool and its nice to see him actually treated as a star again. Even though he lost on RAW (he looked strong in defeat), I hope his momentum continues on from here. It would be nice to add layers to Finn's character. I need more than always smiling, but sometimes demon Balor. If he's ever going to be a true star in the WWE, he needs a well-defined character.

It’s such a shame at how much Bryan has fallen since his return. This was a very compelling match that told a nice set of stories, but the Brooklyn crowd just didn’t seem to care all that much. But to be honest, can you blame them? Bryan hasn’t done anything worth mentioning since his return. The guy is trying his best, but there’s only so much he can do when you give him a lame duck feud against Big Cass and have him take unnecessary pins like the one at Extreme Rules.

Styles/Joe was the match of the night for me. It was slow at first, but it built to a strong match towards the end. Hell, I didn’t even mind the DQ. It perfectly fit the story they were telling and sets up the need for a rematch at Hell in a Cell. No complaints here.

So Becky Lynch is a heel now? The woman who is easily the most over babyface (and charismatic) female on the roster. Plus, Lynch hasn’t even scratched the surface as a babyface yet. The triple threat match was really good and Lynch turning does make sense.

But Charlotte is now a seven-time women’s champion and it only feels like her career has just begun. This is the problem with WWE over pushing wrestlers into the spotlight. Alexa Bliss is a former five-time women’s champion and has only been on the roster for less than four years.

I feel it’s ridiculous that these two keep getting the titles like they're candy, whereas Asuka’s just sitting in the back staring at the wall, Ember Moon is having worthless and nothing feuds, Bayley and Sasha are most likely planning their nine millionth match against the Riott Squad, and I can go on and on about a lot of the talented females on the roster who should be doing more.

Charlotte getting booed in Brooklyn was not surprising at all. But hey, Charlotte’s champion so let’s all celebrate with alcohol and woos.

Overall though, Summerslam was a good show. While RAW wasn't very news worthy except the strong match between Balor and Reigns, I'm a bit more optimistic about the direction of the WWE. Oh and the Shield is back. Again. Yay, I guess.
