We're very nearly on the Road to WrestleMania and WWE is starting to put plans in place for next year's Show of Shows. We're not sure what's happening with The Rock after his seemingly random appearance at Bad Blood and it seems the company is, for now, forging ahead without him.
It was recently reported that WWE hopes to put CM Punk in a world title match at WrestleMania; as for Roman Reigns, he may face The Rock, though it still feels like the Final Boss is going to want a piece of Cody Rhodes before a potential clash with the Original Tribal Chief.
According to Fightful Select's Sean Ross Sapp, WWE has started heavily discussing a Punk vs. Reigns match at the iconic PLE.
The report explains, "We’d heard a number of weeks ago that this wasn’t particularly the plan, but had been adjusted of late. We’re told that CM Punk had also hoped for the match."
This is said to be a drastically different direction for both Superstars at the show, but even what was being considered before isn't said to have taken The Rock into account (should he suddenly decide to return, things could always change).
At Survivor Series: WarGames, Paul Heyman enlisted Punk as the fifth man in Reigns' team. However, the Second City Saint only agreed to that in exchange for a yet-to-be-revealed favour. If Reigns wins a world title between now and WrestleMania, Punk's request could be a shot at his title.
During a recent interview, Heyman said, "If you had told me that in 2012 that 12 years later CM Punk would be a far more fascinating character than he is now at the height of his rebellious status, I’d say that’s just not in the cards for him, and yet I look at what he did with [Drew] McIntyre and realize that he’s so much more interesting now."
"He has a deeper connection with the audience now, which I never imagined would have been possible," the WWE Hall of Famer continued. "You realize that rebels age out and once they do, they can no longer be the embodiment of the disruption that progresses against the establishment, and yet he is now the older rebel with a little more wisdom behind him and a little more tact involved and he’s that much more compelling version of a character and persona - let alone his ability to portray it - than ever before."
