The Rey Fenix saga has been an interesting one.
The former International Champion is currently locked down in AEW for most of 2025, but it doesn’t appear that Fenix will be featured on their program anytime soon. For those who are in the dark about Rey’s situation, him and Penta El Zero Miedo’s contract were originally set to expire sometime in the early fall, but it was clear that the Lucha Brothers had no intentions to re-sign with AEW.
Rumors swirled for months that they were in talks with WWE. Penta and Fenix tried to shut down those rumors, but it ultimately failed since Tony Khan added injury time to Fenix’s contract. The situation died down since it was confirmed that Tony Khan had extended the AEW star’s contract, until Penta El Zero Miedo finally became a free agent last week.
Penta has remained quiet over the subject, with his only appearance since his AEW contract expired being a AAA show in Mexico where the former Lucha Underground Champion gave a farewell speech.
Fenix started posting subtle hints on his social media that accused AEW of mistreatment. The most alarming one was Fenix writing:
“I needed a doctor and you ignored me for months,”
Another statement that sparked conversation was from Dr. Chris Featherstone of the Pancakes and Powerslams podcast where he labeled the situation regarding Fenix and Penta as a “huge injustice”.
Since that tweet, several sources have gone backstage to understand the situation between Fenix and AEW better. Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp was told by officials that, “they're opting to not comment at this time, and can't comment on medical claims."
Fightful select continued the report by stating that Fenix’s comments blindsided AEW officials. One source noted the communication issues between Fenix and AEW management, but they completely disagreed that anything they’ve done could be seen as “inhumane”. It’s possible that Fenix could be trying to stir the pot in order to get an early release. Of course, this is all pure speculation.
But any chance that Tony Khan was going to release Fenix from his contract earlier has gotten extremely slim. There’s still no word on how Tony Khan feels about the situation, but it would be surprising if he was happy about it. It was reported that Khan was upset that the Lucha Brothers were speaking to WWE while they were still under contract.
