The King of the indy scene just got beaten by the King of New York.

Two weeks ago, Matt Cardona surprised ROH fans by challenging Chris Jericho to a match for the ROH World title at Final Battle. Not surprisingly, Chris Jericho wasn’t thrilled about the news, but Cardona has gotten the better of the 54-year-old since the confirmation.

But not on December 14th.

Cardona was facing Effy at Game Changer Wrestling’s Highest in the Room 3 show and the ROH World Champion shockingly ambushed both men. Then Chris Jericho taunted Cardona on social media following his successful attack on his opponent at Final Battle.

This rivalry has been all over AEW television in the past week. It’s a fun match-up between the two former WWE stars as Cardona and Chris Jericho are in different phases of their careers. It was surprising that Cardona answered the call to challenge Jericho at Final Battle, but the 39-year-old responded to fans who didn’t understand why he opted to work down in Ring of Honor:

According to Dave Meltzer, the ambush from Chris Jericho was planned last minute as the AEW star was already in Los Angeles for his band’s gig at the Whisky a Go Go. Since the event was nearby, Jericho thought it would be a good idea to make an unannounced appearance at the show and both GCW and Cardona were onboard.

Interestingly enough, Jericho attacked Effy as well. To recall, Tony Khan took Ricky Starks and all of the AEW wrestlers off future GCW shows because of the comments that Effy made about Khan and the promotion. Meltzer simply describes the assault on Effy as making “sense for all concerned.” What that means is anyone’s guess, though it’s easy to read between the lines on what that statement means.

Final Battle is less than a week away, so this week’s episode of Dynamite should have an exciting go-home segment for the world title match.
