WWE always pushed Edge as a bigger star than Christian, so in many ways, it's no wonder the latter decided to sign with AEW rather than play second fiddle to the Rated R Superstar again.
After making his surprise return at the Royal Rumble this year, most fans expected Christian to become a permanent fixture in WWE again (with a Hall of Fame induction surely on the cards). Instead, Christian Cage is now looking to keep the spotlight solely on himself as part of the AEW roster. This isn't the first time he's left WWE to make a name for himself elsewhere - TNA - and it's going to be exciting seeing what Cage does as part of the newer wrestling promotion.
Talking on Sunday Night’s Main Event, Cage addressed the criticism from fans over his decision.
"The way I think of it is that when you make that kind of announcement, it doesn’t matter who it is," Christian explained. "You’ve given people an opinion and they’re gonna pick who they think it should be or want it to be. And when it’s not who they want it to be, they’re gonna be upset."
"That’s fine. That’s their choice and I think it’s pretty obvious," he continued. "Especially the social media wrestling fans are very fickle and a lot of times, that’s just the way it goes. But the same people will probably be saying if I went somewhere else, ‘Oh, he’s not being used right.’ So it is what it is. You take it with a grain of salt and move on."
Cage makes his in-ring debut for AEW on this Wednesday's episode of Dynamite when he faces his old IMPACT Wrestling rival Frankie Kazarian.
We'll keep you updated on that bout.
