On Friday morning, Dave Meltzer published the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter and shared an update on displaced AEW star Jack Perry.
As you'll likely recall, he was involved in an altercation with CM Punk at AEW All In last summer which saw things allegedly get physical between the two men. AEW President Tony Khan then fired Punk, claiming his very life had been put in danger backstage at the show.
According to Meltzer, Perry has since apologised to Khan and says his recent work in New Japan Pro Wrestling is all part of a storyline for the former Jungle Boy's eventual AEW return. Now, though, it's clear Dave was waaaaay off the mark.
Wrestling Observer Radio's Bryan Alvarez has chimed in to reveal he'd heard from Perry; he says he never apologised to Khan and refused to initiate first contact. As a result, the AEW star didn't hear from Khan for two months following the incident and the two didn't meet up until AEW Full Gear in November.
They did then discuss a possible December return, only for the whole thing to be scrapped when CM Punk made his WWE return at Survivor Series: WarGames. We'd assume that Tony was furious to see his biggest draw return to that company, particularly with his claim of a life-threatening altercation leaving many convinced no one would dare hire the Second City Saint.
Khan and Rocky Romero worked with Perry to set up his NJPW debut but had nothing to do with him ripping up his contract or the fact he's calling himself the "scapegoat."
Perry says he remains under AEW contract but only because the company has denied him his release. He and Khan haven't spoken for months and there are no plans for him to return to the company right now.
This continues something of a bad streak for Meltzer. He also recently reported on a "viral" video of The Rock and Triple H which was at least a decade old that he'd mistaken for a new angle shot but not aired on TV (despite neither man looking remotely like they do now).
Then, there's the fact Dwayne Johnson has just called him out for a "horsesh*t" report about WWE executives being unhappy with his non-PG promos. Moving forward, we'd say it's probably best to take the wrestling historian - and his newsletter - with a hefty pinch of salt.
Stay tuned for updates on Perry's status as we have them.
