Konnan is not fond of Tony Khan.
It’s safe to say that the AEW President catches a lot of flack from various wrestling personalities such as Eric Bischoff, Jim Cornette, and Konnan. While everyone has their opinions about professional wrestling in general, it is alarming how fast AEW’s viewership has fallen in a span of two years.
In March of 2023, AEW was averaging around 850,000 to 900,000 weekly viewers. Fast forward to 2024 and that dropped to around 750,000 to 800,000. These days, AEW’s ratings have fallen to the 600,000 range and based on the viewership, fans aren’t hot about the product at the moment.
So what should AEW do?
Well, if it was up to Konnan, he would completely remove Tony Khan from the creative team as head booker.
"The biggest thing that you can do to turn that place around, either, one: get Tony out of creative and get somebody run the thing, or get some guys around you that are smarter than you, that know what they're doing, that have been in the business, that have had success. “Konnan said on his Keepin’ It 100 podcast. “Him trying to get all the credit, and he's kind of a megalomaniac, [saying] 'I want all the credit, I did this, I write everything...'"
Konnan and Tony Khan have notable issues with one another. The two started out with a good working relationship and it all deteriorated once Konnan started sharing his opinion about the AEW product. Now to be fair, there could be some backstage stuff that might be the true cause for Konnan and Tony Khan’s dissension, so I stated that this is likely the reason that Konnan and Tony Khan are beefing with one another.
Tony has only responded to Konnan’s criticisms once in 2021 and he had a fair rebuttal:
"I think Konnan has called my booking into question, which I find very amusing. If I recall, the biggest money angle you [Konnan/AAA] had that entire year, I booked, I put that entire Lucha Brothers / Young Bucks program together, and set the whole outline to you, which I still have on my phone. That was your biggest TV show in 2019. So, if I don’t know what I’m doing, you don’t either."
Criticism for Tony Khan’s booking is nothing new at this point. Whether Tony will respond to Konnan's latest criticism is currently unknown, though it’s probably unlikely as the AEW President stopped responding a long time ago.
