AEW may have another injury on their hands.
This time, that star may be the former AEW World Champion Samoa Joe. The last time fans saw Joe was at All In where The Opps (Joe, Powerhouse Hobbs, and Katsuyori Shibata) defended the AEW Trios Titles against The Death Riders (Claudio Castagnoli, Gabe Kidd, and Wheeler Yuta) and Joe successfully and the champs retain their belts.
However, The Death Riders attacked The Opps after the match and severely injured the AEW star. Now many assumed that Joe was being written off for the main event later that evening, but in actuality, Joe was being taken off of television due to promotion of Twisted Metal.
During a recent interview, Samoa Joe revealed a surprising revelation: that he fractured his ankle during the filming of the second season. Joe’s not expected to miss a crazy amount of time for AEW, but it just goes to show you how grueling film work can be.
“Normally, I would say the ring is always a much more precarious place to be in,” Joe said to PWInsider . “But halfway through the season, I fractured my ankle. Nothing crazy — we had done a series of pretty crazy driving stunts and some dangerous things here and there. Then it was just parking, and I had to hop out the back on some really rocky, busted-up asphalt. I turned my ankle and spent the rest of the season taping it up and limping through it. Twisted Metal is incredibly physical — fighting scenes, driving scenes. Anytime that car is driving, you see me in it, it’s me. It’s a demanding role, but spending enough time in the ring as I have, it’s no new territory.”
Joe cleared up any possibility that he'll be out because of the injury as he’ll be back on AEW television pretty soon. “Definitely sooner than later. We’re clearing our various medical protocols, and as soon as we’re done with that, we’ll be back to business.”
When will Samoa Joe return to AEW television screens? At the moment, there’s no word on when the AEW Trios Champion is scheduled to come back. There were reports that Joe could be back before Forbidden Door, but nothing has been confirmed nor has any possible match been teased.
As of now, his tag partners are doing singles matches, but Powerhouse Hobbs and Shibata are mainly waiting for the former AEW Champion’s return.
