Did you know Sabu had his retirement match last week?
The world is still buzzing from WrestleMania 41. Last week was arguably the busiest week in professional wrestling as nearly every promotion in town was down in Las Vegas. That included Joey Janela’s annual Spring Break show that featured a host of matches including Megan Bayne, Zack Sabre Jr., Minoru Suzuki, Masha Slamovich, Gabe Kidd, and Mance Warner.
The main event was the retirement No Rope Barbed Wire match between Sabu and Joey Janela. As expected, this was a violent, violent match between the former ECW World Champion and Joey Janela. Now there was only so much that Sabu can do as the man is 60-years-old, so this match wasn't as crazy as his ECW days, but they definitely didn’t hold back on the blood and brutality.
But Sabu wasn’t the only ECW star present as The Sandman came down and interfered.
In the end, Sabu won the match within 15-minutes and it put a stamp on his long professional wrestling career.
Sabu’s professional start was all the way back in 1985. Even before ECW, he competed in WWE, but his fame comes from his time in the Paul Heyman led promotion. Sabu had legendary battles against RVD, Tommy Dreamer, Taz, and Sandman, with him winning the ECW World Heavyweight Championship on two separate occasions. Sabu left ECW in 2000 and tried to venture out in WWE and TNA, but he didn’t have the same impact.
He does have a notable WrestleMania win on his resume as Sabu sided with RVD, Tommy Dreamer, and The Sandman to take on The New Breed (Elijah Burke, Kevin Thorn, Marcus Cor Von and Matt Striker). The ECW Originals won that night, but Sabu’s time in WWE’s version of ECW didn’t last long as he was released in May 2007. Since then, he flipped back and forth from various promotions reliving his most infamous gimmick in ECW. Hopefully, this retirement for Sabi sticks as he originally hung up the boots in 2021, but came back a short time later.
