Unfortunately, former WCW and AAA star Silver King has passed away at the age of 51.
He was wrestling Juventud Guerrera for the Lucha Libre World promotion’s “The Greatest Show of Lucha Libre” event at the Roundhouse in Camden. Late in the match, King collapsed down to the mat unresponsive, with the belief that he suffered a stroke, but died from a heart attack later on.
The Lucha Libre legend has been wrestling since 1985, making his mark in promotions such as WCW, All Japan Pro Wrestling, and Lucha Libre AAA. He held the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship, CMLL World Tag Team Championship, and the World Junior Heavyweight Championship.
Condolences came from both wrestling fans and superstars, most notably NXT General Manager William Regal, who worked with King in WCW back in the 90's.
Eric Bischoff, who Silver King also worked for in WCW, said that the masked wrestler
“helped Americans appreciate Lucha Libre”.
WWE Hall of Famer X-Pac posted a touching tribute to King, saying that he was
“heartbroken to learn of his passing” and praised Silver for being
“truly one of the greats”.
