Unfortunately, WWE announced the release of over a dozen talents and producers within the promotion, one of which was former 24/7 Champion Drake Maverick. Despite his confirmed departure from the company, Maverick revealed during an emotional video regarding his release that he was still being allowed to compete in the Interim NXT Cruiserweight Championship tournament.

To the surprise of many last week, NXT played the heart wrenching video that Maverick released following his departure and officials clearly incorporated the fact that Maverick was fired from the company. Many fans have since assumed that last week’s firing of Maverick may have been for storyline purposes; however, according to Mike Johnson of PWInsider, the 37-year-old was indeed let go from the company.

WWE decided to use the video of Maverick following his release due to it gaining a lot of traction online. At the moment, it doesn’t sound like officials are planning to rehire the man formerly known as Rockstar Spud; however, Johnson never confirms this in his report.

Maverick still has two more matches in Group A of the interim championship tournament which will play out on upcoming episodes of NXT. There’s no word on whether officials plan on having Maverick advance to the finals, but at the moment, it sounds like the former 24/7 Champion will only put over talents within the tournament.
