Carmella Retained The SMACKDOWN LIVE Women's Championship In Typically Underwhelming Fashion

Unfortunately, the SmackDown Live Women's Championship match at Extreme Rules ended in a disappointing fashion when Carmella managed to retain her title by defeating Asuka. James Ellsworth was suspended above the ring in a shark cage but after attempting to provide Carmella with a number of weapons, he broke out of the cage and ended up hanging upside down after getting his foot caught.

Alas, it became apparent that he was connected to the cage via a wire rig as he could be seen wearing one around his midsection and then the wire around his ankle became exposed too. The commentators attempted to pass it off as him wearing a bulletproof vest (really) but the entire thing was pretty cringe-worthy and the only highlight was seeing Asuka treat him like a punching bag!

While the referee was distracted
with freeing him, Carmella slammed Asuka's head into the cage and managed to pin her, retaining the SmackDown Live Women's Championship in the process. Whether or not she'll get another chance to challenge for that remains to be seen but her undefeated streak is now a thing of the past thanks to the way WWE has been booking the Empress of Tomorrow.
