With growing rumors of his upcoming retirement, Edge has officially confirmed his next match will be the last match under his current WWE contract. The legendary Rated-R Superstar is set to celebrate his 25th wrestling anniversary on August 18th during SmackDown in Toronto, Canada.
Last week, Edge made his return to SmackDown and issued a challenge to Sheamus, which Sheamus accepted. This marks their inaugural singles match against each other.
Whether Edge will retire after the match remains uncertain, and even Edge himself admitted to ET Canada that he's unsure. However, Edge did confirm that Friday marks the culmination of his present WWE contract.
"Here's what I can honestly say, and this isn't the answer everyone wants. I truly don't know. I really really, with 100% truth can say I don't know. That's strange for me, but I don't. I really don't. I've put some thought into it, but not a lot. This is the last match on my current contract. I don't know. I honestly don't know. I probably won't know until I get to the locker room that night and decompress, let all the anxiety and tension that I never used to have before I performed, I have now. That's strange for me and makes it that much harder to do this. I'm going to be 50 in October. It's not easy anymore. Before, what I used to take for granted to be able to do, now, there is a process and a fallout. There's a lot. It's the dream gig, but it's getting really hard," Edge stated, in relation to speculations about a potential retirement on August 18.
Following an 11-year break from WWE and pro wrestling, Edge made a striking comeback at the 2020 Royal Rumble, winning the event in 2021, becoming the eighth wrestler to win the Royal Rumble twice and the third wrestler to win the match as the number one entrant.
Subsequently, he engaged in prominent storylines with notable figures within the company, such as Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, AJ Styles, Judgement Day, and The Miz, as well facing Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan in a Triple Threat match for the WWE Universal Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 37.
Edge's earlier tenure in the spotlight was cut short due to a severe neck injury, leading to his departure from the industry in 2011. He earned a spot in the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012.
