Goldberg became an icon in WCW and later signed with WWE for what proved to be a memorable run in the mid-2000s. He returned to the company years later, winning the Universal Championship and feuding with the likes of Brock Lesnar, Kevin Owens, and Roman Reigns.
Inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2018, Goldberg's last match was at Elimination Chamber 2022 when he lost to the Original Tribal Chief.
Goldberg has since revealed that Vince McMahon promised him a proper retirement match, only for it to never happen. However, it's a new day in WWE with Triple H in charge, and Goldberg made a surprise appearance at last year's Bad Blood PLE for a verbal clash with then-World Heavyweight Champion Gunther.
The expectation is that they'll go one-on-one at the next Saturday Night's Main Event. However, the road to retirement hasn't been easy for the WWE Hall of Famer.
"I know the date [of my retirement match]," Goldberg confirmed in a recent interview. "It makes it extremely difficult to get prepared without going overboard. I hurt myself a couple [of] times in the past three months. It is tough."
He explained that gaining weight has not been easy, as he reached "almost up to 270, and [had] to back off because I could not function." He aims to be in "some seriously awesome shape," but confirmed he might make some changes to his ring hear. "I’m terrified to put those trunks on again," Goldberg confessed. "I may even go with different kind of trunks."
Unfortunately, it sounds like the legendary pro wrestler will be limited in what he can do thanks to some long-standing health issues. "I’m extremely limited because of my left knee. I can’t run," Goldberg confirmed. "Hell, I’m working around my shoulder that I haven’t been able to use for five years."
During his last run, Goldberg wasn't at his best in the ring, and we wouldn't expect anything too major from him. WWE can ultimately go two ways with this: either he squashes someone in a classic Goldberg match to end his in-ring career on a high, or he puts over someone like Gunther.
We'll have to wait and see, but it's exciting that WWE is going to let Goldberg get the retirement match McMahon once promised him. Saturday Night's Main Event is scheduled for July 12, so the build-up should begin soon.
Stay tuned for updates as we have them.
