While it was believed that WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle has been released by WWE alongside a number of other backstage producers, it's looking more and more like he's actually been furloughed. Whatever the case may be, the Olympic Gold Medallist retired from in-ring competition last year, but made his return to the squared circle on Wednesday night's NXT to serve as a special guest referee.
However, after refereeing Matt Riddle and Timothy Thatcher's "Cage Fight," there's been a lot of speculation about what his status is with WWE.
Well, according to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, he's heard nothing about Angle potentially signing a new deal with the company. However, Angle is still being paid through mid-July like other WWE employees, and it seems this is a similar situation to Drake Maverick (who has been competing on 205 Live despite his release).
It's a weird situation, but good to see Angle still part of the company. He was never really used as well as he should have been after being brought back to WWE, though his run as RAW General Manager was undeniably entertaining. WWE just waited too long to have him step back into the squared circle.
