Several reliable insiders have reported that John Cena's final opponent at Saturday Night's Main Event later this month will be Gunther. As of now, it looks like they'll be proven right, as he battles LA Knight in the finals of "The Last Time Is Now" tournament on RAW next week.
For many fans, it makes sense for Gunther to be the one who retires John Cena (he put down WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg earlier this year, too). However, one person who isn't on board with the idea of the former World Heavyweight Champion retiring the Leader of the Cenation is his father, John Cena Sr.
Asked for his thoughts on the upcoming match, Cena Sr. said, "Well, it certainly wouldn’t be Gunther, that’s for sure. I don’t think that’s a wise move. I don’t think the fans would enjoy that move. Gunther does not need the rub."
"And by the way, I’m not a fan of the whole 'on the way out you’ve got to push somebody over the top' idea. You’re supposed to pass the torch—but I don’t know if that’s written anywhere in professional wrestling."
At Survivor Series: WarGames, Cena lost the Intercontinental Championship to Dominik Mysterio, and the prospect of another loss in his final bout really doesn't sit right. However, if Cena wins, how would that benefit Gunther or LA Knight?
Cena Sr. continued by arguing, "If we have to use that as an analogy, then he’s already done that with Cody Rhodes. He beat him for the title. He gave the title back. They embraced, Cody was teary-eyed. The torch was passed."
"I think he’s given the rub along the way, especially with Dominik Mysterio. That was a tremendous deal," he added. "Who else do I think he should face? I really wish that Kurt Angle was able to get back in the ring because that would be an outstanding last match for Cena and Angle."
"I say this all the time, I really, truly believe that [Baron] Corbin should not have been Angle’s opponent for his retirement match. It should have been Cena," Cena Sr. concluded, echoing the thoughts of many fans. Unfortunately, Vince McMahon decided on Corbin, a Superstar who has since been released by WWE.
We'll see what happens, but there are only two weeks to go before we bid a final farewell to the 17-time WWE Champion. He is, however, expected to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame next year.
