Yesterday evening's episode of SmackDown was headlined by Gunther vs. LA Knight in the finals of "The Last Time Is Now" tournament. As you'll know by now, the winner of the match was set to earn the right to face John Cena in his final match at Saturday Night's Main Event.
That show will be held next Saturday, December 13, and the Leader of the Cenation's opponent has been officially set.
After several nearfalls, Gunther managed to get Knight into a submission that closely resembled Cena's STF. The Megastar was forced to tap out, and as SmackDown went off the air, a victorious Gunther looked into the camera and warned Cena, "I hope you're paying attention! At Saturday Night's Main Event, you finally and definitely will give up!"
Elsewhere during the show, it was confirmed that the winner of the NXT Championship Match at NXT Deadline—Ricky Saints vs. Oba Femi—will be facing Cody Rhodes next week at Saturday Night's Main Event in one of the show's exhibition matches.
Cena recently spoke with Bill Simmons and was asked why his final match is taking place in Washington D.C. rather than Boston. "That’s way beyond my control," he said. "I don’t book the live event calendar, if it was up to me, every match would be in Tampa."
"You never know, I don’t know if [TD Garden] was available. That’s the thing, 'Man, it would be perfect...' For you, like you don’t know the routing, you don’t know the live event hurdles that they have to go through," Cena explained. "Then, you can get a bunch of 'last of's."
"The last SmackDown in Chicago, where I started, the last time in TD, the last time in MSG, my last RAW, my last Premium Live Event or pay-per-view in San Diego, and then of course the last match," Cena added.
Gunther retired WWE Hall of Famer Bill Goldberg earlier this year, but will the same now be the case with Cena? We'll have to wait and see, but it would be nice for the 17-time WWE Champion to end his career with a win.
