WrestleMania 38 Night 1 took place in Arlington, Texas, and was headlined by a special edition of the "KO Show" which saw the then-heel Kevin Owens welcome WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin as a guest.
KO had spent weeks tearing into the legend's home and, during the promo segment, he challenged Austin to a No Holds Barred match. The retired Texas Rattlesnake agreed, and competed in the ring for the first time since 2003. It was a fun bout which saw Owens hit himself in the head with a chair, leading to Austin hitting him with a Stone Cold Stunner for the 1-2-3.
During a recent interview, Owens reflected on participating in a dream match with his idol and admitted it's tough to describe the experience.
"It's very hard to put into words the feeling I had. The fact that I got to experience that, and it's still hard to believe it ever happened," the former Universal Champion recalls. "I'll go back every couple of months - it used to be every couple weeks or every couple days, I'd have to go back, for a good year after, I'd watch that match or at the very least, the beginning of the match a few times a week to almost prove to myself that it happened."
"We've always had a pretty good relationship before that, which, I think, is why I ended up being in the spot that I was in that night. It hasn't changed, we're still, you know. We don't talk every day or anything like that but we keep in touch."
"I will say this, a month after our match, it was my birthday and I somehow missed the call [from Austin]. I didn't know what happened," Owens continued. "I just saw a voicemail from Steve Austin and it's him singing me happy birthday on my birthday. Probably the greatest thing that came out of that match. That message is saved forever."
Austin has repeatedly praised Owens and recently suggested the match inspired him to consider stepping back into the squared circle at least once more.
"At the age of 57, I headlined the first night of WrestleMania," he said earlier this year. "I never thought I'd do that. If you'd have told me that when I retired in [2003], I'd have said, 'You're crazy,'" Austin continued. "So I'm not gonna sit here and say no to anything, because you never say never in this crazy business of sports entertainment."
