During Money in the Bank's main event, Cody Rhodes and World Heavyweight Champion Jey Uso teamed up to take on Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena and Logan Paul.
In the closing moments of the match, Paul hit an incredible springboard Asai moonsault on Jey, sending both of them through the announce table. While the referee was checking on them, Cena took advantage and hit the American Nightmare with the WWE title.
He looked set to win the match, but a hooded figure hit the ring and attacked Cena. The mystery assailant removed his mask and was revealed as a returning R-Truth (who announced that he'd been released by WWE on June 1).
Truth hit Cena with the title, giving Rhodes the chance to connect with the Cross Rhodes for the 1-2-3.
So, what's going on here? During the Money in the Bank post-show press conference, Triple H strongly hinted that the whole thing had been a work and that this was the plan all along. Truth's son disputed that on social media, and multiple reliable sources are reporting that the decision to bring him back was made in the last 72 hours.
During RAW, NXT, and SmackDown this past week, fans chanted for Truth, and WWE clearly wanted to get ahead of the situation before they regularly started hijacking shows. As of last week, Truth was negotiating independent appearances; while WWE won't admit it (they don't want the fans to think they have too much power), it's clear this wasn't a work or something planned from the start.
In fact, Truth himself has confirmed as much while responding to a fan:
Interestingly, it seems Truth will now go by Ron Killings, with the suggestion being that he's going to shed his comedic persona for what will likely be one final run in WWE (that way, he can end his in-ring career on a high—and a well-deserved WWE Hall of Fame induction—not with an X post).
