At this month's Money in the Bank PLE, John Cena announced that he will retire from WWE in 2025. Next year's WrestleMania in Las Vegas will be his last, though he isn't expected to hang up his jorts until the end of the year.
There's been a lot of speculation about whether the Leader of the Cenation could get a final title run; if so, it would mean he'll end his career with a whopping 17 world title reigns, a feat that puts him ahead of WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair.
During a recent Busted Open Radio interview, Flair said he'd love for his daughter, Charlotte Flair, to beat his title record but admitted he'd have no issue with Cena getting there first.
"The honest to God truth, I think so much personally of John Cena," the Nature Boy said. "He's just one of those really great guys, in my opinion. And I have known a few. In a perfect world, it would be my daughter which I think would be the biggest thing that could ever happen. I told her one time and she got upset. Not upset but she didn't like the comparison."
"I said 'You'd would be as famous as Serena Williams if you broke that record that's been there for so long.' She didn't like the comparison but she's as good an athlete as there is alive today. If they do it with John, I have no problem. I'd be the first one to hit the ring and shake his hand."
"They're meant to be broken," Flair added. "Sentimentally, I like it but - I'd hit the ring on John. I'd probably take a blade, jump him without telling anybody, have him make a comeback, and give me the same hold."
When Tommy Dreamer put it to him that Cena might not want to take Flair's record, he responded, "He was such a fan of mine and all that. I personally kind of agree with you. I don't think he wants to pull the trigger on it."
Since this news started doing the rounds, the WWE Hall of Famer has taken to X to "set the record straight," clarifying that he'd still like Charlotte (who has held 14 titles in WWE) to be the one who beats his 16 reigns.
Who do you think should beat Flair's championship record?
