For the first time in many years, WWE is actually taking the King and Queen of the Ring tournaments seriously. Needless to say, that can be credited to Triple H calling the shots in place of Vince McMahon!
Instead of being used to give undercard talent something to do or to lumber someone with a comedy gimmick, the tournament is being treated like a big deal, with Superstars eager to make history by winning the event (the same event which put Stone Cold Steve Austin on the map, once upon a time).
Now, WWE Chief Content Officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque has confirmed that the winner of each tournament - which will be decided at King and Queen of the Ring in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia this Saturday - receives a world title match on their respective brands.
Those bouts will take place at SummerSlam in August, giving WWE plenty of time to build to them and ensuring they feel like true main event, marquee matches.
As things stand, this means if Gunther becomes King of the Ring, he'll face Damian Priest for the World Heavyweight Champion. However, should Randy Orton or Tama Tonga prevail, then they'll be taking aim at Cody Rhodes' Undisputed WWE Championship.
Understandably, fans are already salivating over the possibility of getting Rhodes vs. Orton at the PLE given their history and the fact they haven't squared off in a WWE ring for the better part of a decade.
On the women's side, Lyra Valkyria will either challenge Women's World Champion Becky Lynch or WWE Women's Champion Bayle will have to defend against Nia Jax or Bianca Belair.
