Who Will Be John Cena's Opponent Following WWE's "The Last Time is Now Tournament"?

John Cena's time in WWE is almost over, and following the announcement that "The Last Time is Now Tournament" will decide his final opponent at Saturday Night's Main Event, who is likely to retire him?

During Saturday Night's Main Event, a video package aired in which John Cena announced "The Last Time is Now Tournament." The 16-man tournament will determine the Leader of the Cenation's final opponent at the next Saturday Night's Main Event on December 13.

Cena confirmed that the tournament will feature competitors from RAW, SmackDown, and NXT, and "maybe even talent who don’t work in WWE."

That last part has generated heaps of speculation among fans online, with the hope being that WWE and AEW might reach an agreement that allows Adam "Edge" Copeland to fight for the chance to battle the 17-time WWE Champion (and one of his greatest rivals).

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem likely, and we may already know what the plan is for Cena's send-off.

It's been widely reported that Dominik Mysterio will defend the Intercontinental Championship against Cena at Survivor Series: WarGames, with the Leader of the Cenation finally gaining the one title that's eluded him his entire career.

From there, Cena would defend the Intercontinental Championship against Gunther—the winner of this tournament—at Saturday Night's Main Event, presumably losing the title to the formidable Austrian in his final bout. It would be an interesting send-off for Cena, and a great way to put Gunther back on the map following some noteworthy losses (and a big win over Goldberg) in 2025.

Following a year-long farewell tour, with stops at WrestleMania 41 and SummerSlam along the way, Cena will bring his decorated career – highlighted by 17 World Championships, five U.S. Championship title reigns and two Royal Rumble victories – to an emphatic close live from the nation’s capital. We recently learned that President Donald Trump may be in attendance

"Despite any speculation or rumors, on July 6, 2024 I announced I would retire from WWE in ring participation," Cena wrote on X last month. "I am far from perfect but strive to be a person whose word has value."

"12/13/25 will be my final match. I am beyond grateful for every moment WWE has given me. I am excited for 12/13 & look forward to seeing all of you one last time," he concluded.

The Rock Dwayne Johnson would make sense. He is the final boss, right?
It sure would generate the most media attention.
