WWE Describes AEW As A Company That Deals In "Gory Self-Mutilation" In Recent Statement

It's no secret that WWE and AEW have very different approaches to the pro wrestling business, but the sports entertainment giant took quite a shot at a recent AEW Rampage match when asked about the company.

While WWE has said on countless occasions that they don't perceive AEW as "competition," the company sure does go out of its way to try and cause problems for the newer promotion. We've heard reports about them attempting to interfere with sponsors and television networks, while Vince McMahon's comments that AEW deals in "blood and guts" is still widely discussed by fans.

Recently, The Toronto Star ran a piece about the way AEW is nipping at WWE's heels (don't forget which company won the Wednesday Night War), and the Vince McMahon-owned sports entertainment giant took aim at that recent AEW Rampage match featuring Penelope Ford and The Bunny taking on Tay Conti and Anna Jay.

"If you look at the gory self-mutilation that bloodied several women in the December 31 event on TNT, it quickly becomes clear that these are very different businesses. We had an edgier product in the `Attitude’ era and in a 2022 world, we don’t believe that type of dangerous and brutal display is appealing to network partners, sponsors, venues, children, or the general public as a whole."

Won't somebody think of the children?!

This is a little pathetic on WWE's part, but comically echoes comments Vince made regarding WCW way back in 1996. Blading (the process of cutting oneself open to bleed) does happen in WWE, albeit rarely, so it feels a lot like stones are being thrown in glass houses with these particular comments.

Blood adds a bit of realism to it and for me makes the match better.

@marvel72 - Well, and they try to make it sound like every AEW match is some kind of blood bath. They aren't. They have specialty matches, like no holds barred matches, or other matches that are going the distance, like Brian Danielson and Hangman, where someone gets busted open. But let's not pretend like that 8s what AEW is hanging their entire hat on. It isn't. Not even close.

And like you said, it goes both ways. Yes, AEW has no problem showing blood. And when you're dealing with a weapons match or no rules match, why wouldn't you? It gets a little silly when WWE has one of their "Extreme Rules" matches and people are getting hit with chairs and kendo sticks, but no one ever bleeds. Their Extreme Rules matches can barely even be considered as such. And if WWE is so much higher above this kind of thing, then why do they even bother with those kinds of matches to begin with?

At the end do the day I'm tired of the back and forth between these companies. And it is both of them. And AEW are the ones that started it. I can admit that. But it's getting stupid. Both companies do things really well, and both companies have their flaws. Period.

@CorndogThief - Totally agree, just let both companies do there thing and that's it.

I don't watch WWE at all, well highlights on YouTube.

For me AEW and NJPW is what I like and will watch week to week.

Waiting for NEW JAPAN PRO WRESTLING Vs NOAH, two Japanese promotions colliding,it happened on 8.1.22 and I believe should be appearing on NJPWWORLD.COM any day now.

Is he kidding? The kids love the blood! It's really exciting when some matches get some blood.

They’re claiming bragging rights for the edgier stuff from the attitude era and the trying to take the high road for the product today? What about some of the other aspects of the attitude and aggression eras like pudding matches and putting a 80 year old woman through a table? Don’t get me wrong, it was entertaining but you can’t brag about it and go highbrow in the same sentence.
