At this year's WrestleMania, Cody Rhodes was a firm fan favourite to finally dethrone Roman Reigns and become the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion.
Unfortunately, the American Nightmare was unable to beat the Head of the Table, a move many fans have described as being among WWE's worst creative decisions in recent memory. Ask Stone Cold Steve Austin, though, and he believes Rhodes' loss was the right outcome for everyone involved.
Talking on Busted Open Radio (via WrestlingNews.co), the WWE Hall of Famer said, "I completely thought that they made the right decision. I really respect the hell out of Cody for what he did when he walked away from WWE and found himself."
"Anyway, he gets injured. He blows out a pec. He competes in the Royal Rumble. Now he comes back and he gets in the main event with Roman. I just think it was so storybook. It would have been so cliche to put the belt on him," Austin continues. "Has he earned the opportunity to be there?"
"Yeah, but would he have been the right guy, right now, trying to take out Roman Reigns? I just think not."
The legendary former WWE Champion would go on to praise everyone involved and reiterated his belief that Cody will eventually capture the title that's alluded his family for such a long time.
As for why this wasn't the right time to pull the trigger on that, the Texas Rattlesnake concludes, "You know that story is going to be completed one of these days, but it ain't gonna be right here and it was for the right reasons, and the reasons were business."
Reigns has now held the title for close to 1000 days and there has to be some sort of endgame in mind. What that will be remains to be seen.
Do you agree with Austin's assessment?
