During this past Monday episode of RAW, WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg made his return and confronted World Heavyweight Champion Gunther.
Following their verbal clash at last year's Bad Blood PLE, they'll now square off at Saturday Night's Main Event in what's expected to be Goldberg's retirement match. However, there's been some confusion about what the stakes will be.
Is the title on the line? Will Goldberg compete in a few matches this year before hanging up his boots at the end of 2025? The first of those was answered after RAW when we learned this bout will be for the World Heavyweight Championship.
As for the second, we have some clarification, courtesy of a WWE press release:
"WWE, part of TKO Group Holdings, today announced that individual event tickets for Saturday Night’s Main Event on Saturday, July 12 – headlined by Goldberg’s final match versus WWE World Heavyweight champion GUNTHER – and Evolution on Sunday, July 13, in Atlanta will go on sale starting Wednesday, June 25 at 10am ET/7am PT via Ticketmaster.com."
Some might argue that knowing this is Goldberg's "final match" lessens the stake, as he surely won't win the title. WWE can address that by either adding a stipulation to the match or by having the WWE Hall of Famer make it clear he intends to win, and then vacate, Gunther's title.
During a recent interview (you can watch it below), Goldberg revealed what it means to be able to challenge Gunther for his World Heavyweight Championship.
"I remember meeting him years ago right when he broke in and the guy had a shooting star up his ass at that point and I knew he was gonna be destined for big things and hey, it’s an honor for me to get in the ring with him," he said. "It’s an honor to step into a position to be vying for the World Heavyweight Championship at 58 years old. I don’t know of any other ones who’ve retired with a match like that."
Former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon promised Goldberg a retirement match, and went back on the deal. It looked like that might be it for the WCW icon in WWE, but Triple H has made it right with what will be the biggest Saturday Night's Main Event match to date.
