WrestleMania 40 will take place next April at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While we still have big events like Survivor Series and the Royal Rumble to look forward to, the Showcase of the Immortals is on another level and excitement is rapidly starting to build.
According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, at least four matches are tentatively pencilled in for the Show of Shows. Among them is Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes in a long-awaited WrestleMania 39 rematch.
"Right now based on things told to me and staredowns on television, whether this is for Mania or another big show, the 'down the line' teases this week were Reigns vs. Rhodes, Ripley vs. Lynch, Jimmy vs. Jey and Flair vs. Cargill."
Rhea Ripley vs. Becky Lynch, Jimmy Uso vs. Jey Uso, and Charlotte Flair vs. Jade Cargill are all, without a doubt, WrestleMania-level matches that all have the potential to take the main event spot. A lot can happen between now and then, of course, but here's hoping Rhodes, in particular, finally gets to finish the story.
Of course, this leaves us with the question of what's happening with The Rock.
After recently revealing he very nearly faced Reigns at this year's WrestleMania, the Brahma Bull suggested everyone involved with the bout wanted to do something bigger. While WWE would like him on the show, it doesn't sound like something Triple H - who has since taken over from Vince McMahon as head of WWE creative - is actively pushing for.
"Regarding the stories that WWE won’t do Rock vs. Reigns at Mania if Rock wants to do it, what we were told is this," Dave Meltzer starts. "If he wants the spot I can’t believe WWE would turn him down, but after Johnson turned it down last year, nobody is going with the idea he’s going to do it this year."
"The match is not scheduled, unlike at this time last year when the match was considered a good shot." Unsurprisingly, it's said The Rock's busy Hollywood schedule will likely be the biggest issue and the historian also pointed out that, "We were told that Rock is not going to come back and win the title."
As always, we'll keep you updated as we learn more about WWE's plans.
