WWE Fastlane first took place in 2015 and replaced Elimination Chamber in the February slot of WWE's PPV calendar. That show was then pushed to May, with "Fastlane" meant to reference the fact WWE was on the "Road to WrestleMania."
In 2017, it moved to March, making it WWE's first non-WrestleMania PPV to be held that month. RAW-exclusive in 2017 and SmackDown-exclusive in 2018, it was produced until 2020, removed in preference of Super ShowDown, and then resurrected before being taken off the calendar again in 2021.
Today, WWE has announced that the next Fastlane will take place Saturday, October 7 from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. It marks the first premium live event to emanate from Indianapolis in seven years.
Paul Heyman actually broke the news on The Pat McAfee Show, beating World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins to the punch.
"Mr. McAfee, do you think that the fact that FastLane comes to Indianapolis, based on the fact that Indianapolis is the host of the Indianapolis 500, it's known for the FastLane," the Special Counsel to Roman Reigns says in the video below.
"Not only does WWE bring relevancy to Indianapolis," Heyman continues, "but by virtue of the fact that Indianapolis has either let, licensed, or sold the name FastLane, from the Indianapolis 500 to WWE, that Indianapolis brings relevancy WWE."
As you might expect, it's far too soon for any matches to be announced but we're definitely curious to learn if there's a deeper reason for Fastlane being added to the calendar in October. It's presumably because the name works so well in the location it hails from, but this is an intriguing move, regardless.
