John Cena is honoring all of the men he’s faced throughout his career.
That became noticeable in his match against Logan Paul where past rivals Baron Corbin, Dolph Ziggler, and Cesaro were represented through their signature moves.
That continued in the Sami Zayn match a few weeks ago on Smackdown. John Cena used Kurt Angle’s Angle Slam and Ankle lock, CM Punk’s GTS, Kevin Owen’s Pop-Up Powerbomb, and Edge’s signature spear.
Mr. Copeland (aka Edge) responded to Cena paying homage to their legendary rivalry in the early 2000’s and he loved the entire moment.
“I saw a clip where he did the whole set up and everything,” Cope said on The Score.
“It’s super fun. For John and I, we’re two guys that met each other at the right time. He needed a bad guy. I needed a good guy. It just clicked. You never know when something is going to click. I remember with Eddie (Guerrero) and I, the first time we wrestled, it was okay. ‘It should’ve been more than that.’ The next one was a little more, and finally by our third match we were like, ‘There it is.’ With John and I, from day one, it just clicked. Our characters were polar opposites. I knew what the assignment was, and so did he.
You had two guys who were very willing to do what we had to do to get us both over. John was very well on his way, but I feel like our angle is what really put the stamp on him being the top guy, and it put the stamp on me being the main event guy. I’ll always look back on that fondly and what we were able to do and the fun we had.”
John Cena was the first man to feel the effects of the Money in the Bank cash in as Edge beat him for the WWE Championship after a hellacious Elimination Chamber match at New Year’s Revolution.
The two would continue to feud later that year with a memorable TLC match at Unforgiven 2006. Edge and John Cena would continue to cross paths for years to come. Though Cena hasn’t fought Edge as much as Randy Orton, he’s arguably the most prominent rival he’s had in his illustrious career. Cena helped elevated Edge's career and in vice versa. It's cool that John is paying his respects to the WWE Hall of Famer.
