David Starr is coming off arguably one of the biggest wins of his career, as the Philadelphia native won the 2019 PROGRESS Wrestling’s Super Strong Style 16 tournament. The former CZW World Heavyweight Champion defeated NXT UK’s Jordan Devlin to win a shot at the PROGRESS ATLAS and World Champion WALTER in the future.

Starr sat down with WrestleTalk and revealed that he was actually contacted by the WWE several times in the past, but has turned down the company’s advances due to WWE’s lack of health care:

“I’ve been contacted by them before and I’ve turned it down a couple of times. The thing that doesn’t hit home with the European audience is the health care thing. Because you’re very fortunate to just go to the hospital. That’s one of the reasons I moved to the UK. Being a professional wrestler, it’s hard to afford healthcare, the things you need.”

WWE’s treatment of their "independent contractors" has been a hot topic again since John Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight” segment that heavily criticized the company for its treatment of its employees. Hopefully the promotion has a change of heart in the future for the guys and girls who risk and sacrifice their bodies every week.
