At the Money in the Bank PLE earlier this month, John Cena confirmed that he will retire from WWE in 2025. Before we reach that point, the 16-time WWE Champion is set to embark on a "retirement tour" which, hopefully, is going to include a long list of dream matches.
Now, one of Cena's greatest rivals - CM Punk - has shared his take on potentially stepping back into the ring with the Leader of the Cenation.
The last time Punk and Cena stood in the squared circle together was for a December 2013 match which saw them team up to battle The Shield (their last singles match against each other was in February of that year).
Talking at the San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, Punk reiterated his desire to work with Cena next year and made an interesting pitch for how a possible reunion could play out.
"If I had to tag up with somebody to beat some people up, it would probably Larry," he started. "Everybody’s asking me because [John] Cena has announced his retirement that, you know, obviously they wanna see us fight each other. I think there’s something to me and him tagging. I think that can be pretty interesting."
Talking during the Money in the Bank post-show press conference, Punk reflected on his and Cena's connection. While he's compared it to a marriage in the past, he instead likened it to two comic book friends and rivals.
"I always looked at it [their dynamic] like Superman and Batman," Punk said. "You know, Superman - he's great, he's cool...if you like that sort of thing. Then there's Batman - who doesn't like Batman? And that's what I mean, when you talk about John, you got to talk about me; certainly when you talk about me, you've got to talk about John."
The Best in the World also reflected on his iconic Money in the Bank 2011 match with Cena. That ended with Punk walking out of WWE with the WWE Championship in a story which broke the internet at the time and remains a career highlight for both men in the ring.
"That moment, that night, you say it's the best moment of my career," he started. "I feel fortunate to have had a career where I can maybe argue that, and I think a lot of other people could argue that too. I'm going to always be tied to John Cena, and if that is the greatest moment of my career, I'm proud of that."
