Friday night's episode of SmackDown began with a bang as Kevin Owens squared off with Santos Escobar. The winner of the number one contender's tournament would be given the chance to face Logan Paul for the United States Championship at the Royal Rumble, so the stakes were high!
Before the bout started, Escobar's new associates Angel Garza and Humberto were taken out by the LWO's Legado del Fantasma, Joaquin Wilde and Cruz Del Toro, and it looked like KO might pick up a quick win.
The match continued, though, and Owens ultimately managed to pick up the 1-2-3 with a Pop-Up Powerbomb and Stunner combination.
Paul, who had been watching from ringside on commentary, immediately got in the microphone and started to tear into both Owens and the Canadian locals. Earning boos for saying KO had as much chance of beating him as the "Canucks" do of winning the Stanley Cup, the influencer got his comeuppance when Owens punched him in the face!
Well, that had to hurt, right?
It's hard to imagine WWE taking the United States title from Paul this soon, but Triple H clearly has big plans for Owens and it seems fitting for him to be the one who dethrones the loud-mouthed celebrity.
WWE could stretch the feud out to WrestleMania, of course, but if KO does defeat Paul a few weeks from now, then it's likely the company has other plans for him at the Show of Shows.
