In a segment likely to be remembered for all the wrong reasons, last night's episode of AEW Dynamite ended with Jack Perry asking AEW President Tony Khan to shake his hand and reinstate him.
The former Jungle Boy got what he asked for, but proceeded to punch Khan in the stomach. Tony, who admittedly isn't a trained wrestler, awkwardly fell to the mat and only realised he needed to sell the blow to his midsection seconds later.
The Elite, The Young Bucks and Kazuchika Okada, then made their way to the ring and proceeded to beat up the executive in what marked Khan's first physical involvement in the company's five-year history.
If this feels like a desperate ploy for ratings, it's likely because it is.
AEW Dynamite viewership has been on the decline for months now, and not even airing the real-life security footage from All In managed to turn things around. Fans have long wondered whether Khan, who is living out his teenage fantasies with AEW thanks to his father, might get involved in storylines and it's finally happened.
Later, Shahid Khan came out to check out his son and Tony is expected to sell his injuries during today's NFL draft.
While this segment has piqued the interest of fans, it makes little logical sense. Perry was suspended (legitimately) due to his involvement in a backstage altercation with CM Punk at last August's All In, and the Second City Saint was fired after Tony was left supposedly fearing for his life.
That happened because a monitor fell near him, so why Khan wouldn't immediately fire his EVPs and Perry after this is hard to say. Regardless, it looks like he's now entered his "Tony McKhan" era.
