Do we have a new feud brewing between the TBS and Women’s World Champion?
Before Mariah May got into the ring with Mina Shirakawa at Winter is Coming, the current AEW World Women’s Champion tried to stir the pot with Mercedes Mone. Speaking with Renee Paquette on Close-Up with Renee Paquette, May took shots at the TBS Champion about her backstage attitude when it comes to helping out the locker room:
"I don’t care. Honestly, half the time, I don’t know she’s stepped in here because I don’t know this, but she has her own locker room. So she says she’s here to help and she cares so much? So come into our locker room. Come into our tiny little locker room and help us, teach us, share your knowledge from all these years of experience you’ve apparently had.
But no, she’s sitting in her locker room, and she’s writing her Mone Mag. I mean, how many people are reading that magazine? Who actually cares about your magazine? Because I care about women’s wrestling, and I care about being on the show and getting more than 10 minutes.
So if you care, come step in the room with me,”
It’s not clear if this is a shoot or legit criticism. Mercedes Mone has yet to respond to Mariah May’s interview, nor is there any backstage news on what the purpose of the AEW star calling out Mone like this was.
It’s likely a shoot, though given the fact that both Mariah and Mercedes are heels, it would be an awkward time to call out the TBS Champion. There were rumors that the locker room was divided on Mone’s special treatment backstage. The former WWE star signed a deal for seven figures ($3 million allegedly), with special perks such as her own private room.
It should be interesting to see if anything happens with this in the coming months. Mariah May is busy with both Toni Storm and Thunder Rosa, so it’s doubtful that she’ll be facing Mercedes Mone anytime soon. Mone is also feuding with Anna Jay, with a possible match against Kamille in the future.
It would be cool to see a TBS vs. Women’s World Champion match someday, but it simply has to make sense from a storytelling and character perspective. Neither woman are playing cool heels, so it’ll be hard for fans to invest into a match where both of the wrestlers are unlikeable.
