Could Mariah May’s contract be coming to an end soon?
In one of the more shocking reports this week, it sounds like Mariah May’s time in AEW could be coming to an end. The 26-year-old originally signed a contract with AEW in 2023, which in this day and age, is rare for a performer to not have a lengthy contract in one of the big promotions.
According to Figtful Select, the belief within AEW is that May’s contract is set to expire in summer; however, Tony Khan is keen on keeping the former AEW Women’s World Champion. There’s rumors swirling that May could have an option on her contract, but that bit of information hasn’t been confirmed just yet.
May has certainly been one of the standout performers on the AEW roster and it helps that she's coming off the best women's feud in AEW history. The last time May was on television was at Revolution where she lost her rematch to Toni Storm in a brutal Hollywood Ending match. There’s no word on if the company and May are currently deep in talks about renewing her contract, though it's expected for WWE to be interested in May if she opts to not re-sign.
May spoke about her past experiences with WWE on Talk is Jericho and noted that she tried out for the company on two separate occasions.
“Yeah, I did. I had a tryout with them. I had three matches and they asked me to do a tryout and I was like, ‘What?’. I thought it was for WWE, but I think it was actually for NXT UK, which is different, cause I’m not sure I would have ever signed there. With WWE, I would’ve signed early on because there is a PC and you’re gonna train and stuff. I had a tryout with them then and Sarah Stock gave me the advice to go and travel."
“They knew about me before and they had spoken to me before and stuff and then NXT UK happened, and they’re like, come and try out for this. They said to travel more and they wanted me to get more experience because with NXT UK, they didn’t have a full-time PC, it was like once every two months. I had that, and it was before lockdown. Then after lockdown they reached out to me before I went to Japan actually, and I think whoever it was got fired or something like that.”
It would be surprising if May leaves AEW after such a short tenure, but she’ll make a worthy addition to any roster if she opts against staying with the company. As of this writing, there’s no timetable set for her television return.
