After being stripped of the ROH World Championship due to injury, Jay Briscoe came back strong and went on to defeat Michael Elgin to become a two-time world champ. However, the true test for Briscoe began following his big title win as the 36-year-old had a massive target around his waist; The Delaware native successfully defended the belt against names such as Adam Cole, Tommaso Ciampa, and Hanson; however, a huge challenger stepped up to fight Briscoe at Supercard of Honor IX.
Following his departure from TNA/Impact Wrestling, Samoa Joe made his return in a big way by going after the top dog of Ring of Honor. The 41-year-old quickly rose through the rankings of the heavyweight division during his time in the promotion back in 2002 by defeating Xavier to capture the ROH World Championship. Joe would go on to keep the belt for 21 months.
The “Samoan Submission Machine” was surely hungry to reclaim what he lost over a decade ago, and Jay Briscoe wanted to prove that he belonged in the main event scene of Ring of Honor. Not surprisingly, both men had an all-out war inside the ring that resulted in Briscoe beating the veteran and retaining his ROH World title.
