To the shock of many within the wrestling community, Marty “The Villain” Scurll re-signed with Ring of Honor back in January.
It was heavily speculated that the former ROH World Television Champion was AEW bound once his contract ended in November; however, based off the interview Matt & Nick Jackson conducted with comicbook.com, the news was hardly a surprise to them.
“We were kind of feeling him out for a while now and he always was very vague with us, anytime we would bring up storylines and stuff,” Nick Jackson said. “So, we pretty much got the hint three months ago or so. And we realized, ‘Okay, he’s staying put.”
For the first time since inking a new deal with the company, Scurll himself speaks about why he decided to remain with Ring of Honor for the foreseeable future. The 31-year-old states his admiration for AEW and what the company has done so far; however, it appears that it ultimately came down to Scurll having a different vision for his career (Transcript courtesy of Wrestletalk.com):
“I’m sure most expected me to go to AEW, and of course, Matt & Nick (The Young Bucks) are two of my best friends in the whole entire world. I love them and I love what they are doing. I’m very proud of them. When it came to my decision though, I, like them, had my own vision, my own dreams, and the opportunity to create a promotion in my own vision was something I always wanted and couldn’t turn down.
I’ve been wrestling for a long time and it was time to do something new and set a new challenge for myself. ROH have always been amazing to me, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be more involved. They have the trust in me, and it really gives me the chance to be creative, which I’ve always enjoyed more than anything. I have great relationships with Tony, Cody and Kenny, and it’s cool that we’re all doing our own things and making a splash in the wrestling world," Scurll said.
