The date for Death Before Dishonor has changed. Again.
The upcoming Ring of Honor show was scheduled to take place on September 5th, but AEW announced on Collision that the pay-per-view will now take place one week earlier on Friday, August 29th. The upcoming event will take place at the 2300 Arena, which is known as the ECW Arena by longtime fans, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Before DBD was slated to happen on July 11th; however, that all changed because of Supercard of Honor. Death Before Dishonor will be part of an AEW residency as three episodes of Dynamite and Collision will also take place. Thus far, Death Before Dishonor doesn’t have any confirmed matches, but that should change very soon.
Death Before Dishonor is typically held in July, so this is quite the change for the annual pay-per-view. The first Death Before Dishonor show took place in 2003 on July 19, 2003. That night, Samoa Joe successfully defended the ROH World title against Paul London in the main event.
Hopefully, Death Before Dishonor doesn’t feel as rushed as Supercard of Honor did. That was actually an amazing show; especially Athena vs. Thunder Rosa and Bandido vs. Konosuke Takeshita. There’s no word on what the line-up will look like for the Death Before Dishonor show.
This isn’t the first time AEW has gone to an ECW adjacent city as Final Battle was held in the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York, New York. That night, Chris Jericho successfully retained his ROH World title against Matt Cardona. Athena beat Billie Starkz to continue her historic ROH World Women’s Championship run. And The Sons of Texas defended their ROH World Tag Team titles against The Righteous.
There’s been some talk about Tony Khan rebranding ROH under the AEW banner and it seems to be something that the AEW President is considering.
“AEW has made huge media rights deals that have changed the landscape for all wrestling companies, including ROH, and any deal we do, it’s got to make really good sense for everyone involved, including us at ROH and also AEW. So, that is something I’ve considered… Right now, I think we’ve done a great job positioning the company as leaders, with leading champions like Athena and Bandido.” Transcript courtesy of Fightful
As of now, ROH is stuck behind a paywall so the promotion does need some rebranding as it’s just not a company that anyone is talking about except Athena’s run as champion. It’s not clear if Tony is in talks to finally bring ROH back on television, but it would surely go a long way once they do.
